The Bigger Picture page is designed to give you the broader context of your school data, comparing it with the most recently published regional and national statistics. This is broken down into the 3 following sections:
- Demographics - the make up of your school.
- Attainment - combined Reading, Writing & Maths.
- Absence - absence and persistent absence rates.
To access this, go to the go to the 'School Analysis' sub-heading in the 'KS1-3' section of the left-hand menu and click on The Bigger Picture tab:
The first thing you will notice is the Display Options strip at the top of the page, which will allow you to view/manipulate the data in the 3 sections below, into your preferred format. You can use these buttons at any time:
- Table: click here to view your data in tabular format (where applicable).
- Bar Chart: click here to view your data as bar charts (where applicable).
- Regional Data: use this button to toggle the regional comparative data on/off (on by default). We use your LEA number to define region.
- National Data: use this button to toggle the national comparative data on/off (on by default). We use the most recently published (and verified) national database, which will usually be previous EoY unless there are extenuating circumstances.
Demographics
This section is designed to demonstrate the make up of your school with regard to each of the vulnerable groups.
- Pupil Number shows in bold, the total number of pupils in your school. The text below shows you what percentage (number of pupils in brackets) of your pupils have been with you 'all the way through'. This is calculated as being in attendance before the end of the first term of their first historic year (for Primary and Infant schools this is reception, Junior schools is Y2 etc.).
- Mobility shows you what percentage (number of pupils in brackets) of mobility you have in each individual year group.
- FSM compares the percentage of Free School Meals pupils you have enrolled with regional and national. You can hover the curser over the bar to access more information.
- SEND compares the percentage of SEND pupils you have enrolled with regional and national. You can hover the curser over the bar to access more information.
- EAL compares the percentage of EAL pupils you have enrolled with regional and national. You can hover the curser over the bar to access more information.
- Gender compares the percentages of Girls/Boys you have enrolled with regional and national. You can hover the curser over the bar to access more information.
Attainment
This section is designed to give you a quick snapshot of your 'Reading, Writing & Maths' attainment data, in order to benchmark your school.
- Show Venn will toggle your school data into either Venn Diagram or Pie Chart format. It is worth noting that the Venn is only available for your school data, as the 'overlaps' are not published by the DfE.
- Year Group will allow you to select which year group (or all), you wish to view.
- Floor Std allows you to select a different standard as the threshold for your school data, in the same was it does on the 'Combined Dashboard/Monitoring' pages.
- Filter allows you to choose which, if any, vulnerable groups you would like to filter the data by. It is worth noting that we are limited here by the groups the DfE recognise.
- Gender allows you to filter the data by boys/girls. Note that it is separate from the previous dropdown, so for example you could look at your 'free school meal boys' if you wish.
- Reading, Writing & Maths shows a Venn/Pie of your school data from the end of the previous academic year. You can hover the curser over each section of the pie to access more information.
- Regional shows the R, W & M for the most recently published regional data (usually previous EoY). You can hover the curser over each section of the pie to access more information.
- National shows the R, W & M for the most recently published national data (usually previous EoY). You can hover the curser over each section of the pie to access more information.
Absence
This section is designed to highlight how much absence you have in school, and in particular how much of it is persistent (absence rate of 10% or more).
- Overall: the left-hand chart shows the percentage of both authorised (top/light) and unauthorised (bottom/dark) absences for your whole school, compared both regionally and nationally. The right-hand chart shows your persistent absence rate (10%+) compared regionally and nationally. As with all the other sections, the comparative data will be the most recently published and you can hover over each section of the bar for more information.
- FSM: same as above, but for your FSM pupils.
- SEND: same as above, but for your SEND pupils.
- EAL: same as above, but for your EAL pupils.
